Alopecia Areata tends to refer to the condition where hair is lost in one or more patches on the scalp. Diffuse Alopecia Areata occurs where the hair loss occurs over the whole scalp. Conversely Alopecia Areta Monolocularis refers to baldness in one area of the scalp, whilst Alopecia Areta Multilocularis involves many different areas of hair loss.
Alopecia can also be a male specific problem, where Alopecia Areata Barbae refers to baldness in the beard only.
Where the entire scalp becomes bald, the variety of Alopecia is known as Alopecia Totalis. Complete hair loss over the while body is Alopecia Universalis.
A Trichoscopy can be used to help diagnose Alopecia.
There are thought to be methods of hair regrowth that may help with this condition.
Alopecia comes from alōpekíā f. alōpēx, alōpek, translated from Greek as “fox”, as it was originally thought to look like mange in foxes.
